TIME FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT?
Your next home charger should fit the way you live now
Perhaps the charger came with the house, the app no longer suits you or your next car has changed what you want from home charging. You may simply have a unit that is no longer reliable.
We can help you weigh up whether the equipment needs replacing, whether the problem needs investigating first and what the existing electrical installation can safely support.
FOUR REASONS PEOPLE CONTACT US
Does any of this sound familiar?
You can ask for advice before choosing a new charger. A replacement is not always the first or only option.
01
The existing charger has stopped working
If charging has become unreliable or the unit will not operate, the cause may be the charger, its supply or the communications setup. We can discuss the symptoms and whether an electrical assessment or manufacturer support is the sensible first step.
02
You want a smarter charger
An older unit may not offer the scheduling, app controls or energy features you now want. We can compare suitable replacement equipment, checking any tariff or home-energy functions rather than assuming every charger works with every setup.
03
Your car or charging routine has changed
A different vehicle, a second EV or a preference for a tethered or untethered connection can change the ideal arrangement. We look at cable reach, vehicle compatibility and how the existing charger position works day to day.
04
You want a neater or more suitable installation
Replacing a unit is an opportunity to consider its position, the visible cabling, the condition of the circuit and the finish around the property. We will explain which parts could be retained and which need separate work.
If a charging cable or connector is visibly damaged or there are signs of overheating, stop using it and seek qualified advice. For general guidance see Electrical Safety First.
WHAT WE CHECK BEFORE A SWAP
Not every old charger can simply be exchanged
The new charger needs to work with the existing electrical installation. We will check what is appropriate rather than assume a previous installation is automatically suitable for new equipment.
01
The existing circuit and protection
Condition and suitability of the supply, cable, isolation, earthing and protection for the replacement charger. Any changes are identified before fitting.
02
The charger and how you use it
Tethered or socketed, Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity, smart scheduling, solar-aware features and charger mounting compatibility. We review what actually matters to your household.
03
Warranty, access and the scope of work
If the old unit may be under warranty, check the manufacturer route first. We then agree the work WB would undertake, removal/disposal arrangements and any extras needed for a different charger.
Replacing an EV charger does not automatically mean a new consumer unit or cable run. Equally, a new unit is not automatically suitable for the old circuit. The electrical assessment decides what can sensibly be reused.
A CLEAR ROUTE TO A BETTER SETUP
From the old charger to the next one, without guesswork
Send us a photograph of the old charger, its model if known, and where the car is parked. If you already have a preferred replacement, tell us. You can also begin with a simple call.
We can discuss the existing system, manufacturer or warranty responsibilities, and whether an on-site electrical assessment is needed. Any charger, circuit changes or additional work will be set out in the quotation.
Four straightforward steps
01. Tell us what is installed and what you want to change.
02. We review compatibility and the existing electrical setup.
03. We agree the new equipment, electrical scope and price.
04. We replace or install, test and explain the new setup.
If fault investigation shows that a different solution is needed, we will discuss the findings and the next steps rather than assume the original quotation covers unexpected work.

REAL WB WORK · CAREFUL INSTALLATIONS
A replacement should look right on your home
Existing WB domestic EV photographs and published customer feedback demonstrate the care we aim to bring to charging installations: tidy routes, good communication and a considered finish around the property.
The images are examples of WB domestic electrical work, not claimed before-and-after photographs of a charger replacement. You can show us your current setup so we can discuss the appropriate finish at your home.

LOOKING AT NEW CHARGERS?
You can change the charger brand as well
You do not necessarily have to choose the same manufacturer again. We can discuss a suitable replacement from the home-charging range, including everyday smart options, premium designs and Tesla Wall Connector where appropriate.
Compare smart and solar home EV chargers or return to the Home EV Charging hub to explore the full range. Brand and model compatibility will be checked for your property.
CHARGER REPLACEMENT QUESTIONS
Answers before you replace an EV charger
The practical questions about faults, warranties, reusing electrical work, changing brands and what a replacement quotation includes.
Can you replace an EV charger installed by another company?
We can discuss an existing installation regardless of who originally fitted it. We will need to review the charger, its circuit and any warranty conditions before confirming the scope of a replacement.
Can you repair my charger instead of replacing it?
That depends on the fault, manufacturer support and whether an appropriate repair is available. Electrical fault finding may identify a supply problem rather than a faulty unit. We will explain the sensible route instead of promising to repair every make or model.
Can the new charger use my existing cable?
Sometimes, but not automatically. The cable, route, protection, earthing, isolation and new charger requirements all need checking. We would not simply connect different equipment without reviewing the installation.
Do I need a new consumer unit for a replacement?
Not necessarily. A suitable existing supply and protective arrangement may be reusable. If the board, protection or capacity needs alteration for the chosen charger, we will explain that and price it separately.
Can I change from tethered to untethered, or vice versa?
Often a different cable arrangement is possible when choosing a new charger. We review your vehicle connector, where the car parks, cable length, charger position and the suitability of the replacement model.
Can I change to a charger with solar or off-peak features?
Yes, if suitable equipment and the required home-energy or connectivity arrangements are available. Some solar and load-management functions need additional sensors or accessories, and tariff integrations depend on the supplier and charger model.
Will replacing the charger affect the manufacturer warranty?
If the existing charger may still be covered, contact the manufacturer or original installer first and follow its claims process. Unauthorised removal or replacement can affect cover. Any new manufacturer and installation warranties are confirmed with the actual quotation.
What information should I send for a replacement quotation?
Your postcode, the existing charger make/model if known, a photo of the unit, any fault symptoms and what you want from the next charger are a good start. Photos of the consumer unit or cable route may help later.
Will the quotation include removal of the old charger?
We will make the agreed scope clear. Removing the old unit, supplying and fitting its replacement, any electrical alterations, disposal, setup and commissioning should be identified, along with any exclusions or conditional items.
How long does a charger replacement take?
Timing depends on the existing installation, selected charger, access and any faults or alterations identified. We will agree the programme once the scope is clear rather than promise every job can be completed in one visit.
Not sure whether you need a replacement or just advice? You can still get in touch and tell us what the charger is doing.
