North British Distillery is an Edinburgh grain whisky producer with an industrial history dating back to 1885. WB Electrical has supported the client since 2016, with work extending from the Edinburgh distillery to associated warehousing sites in West Lothian.

The relationship is not centred on one isolated installation. It combines planned upgrades, reactive fault finding, compliance-led activity and practical electrical improvements as buildings, equipment and operational requirements change.

That continuity matters on a working industrial estate. Familiarity with the sites, their access arrangements and existing electrical infrastructure helps each new task begin with better context while the scope, risks and isolation requirements are still confirmed afresh.

The challenge

Electrical Work That Has to Fit the Site

At a working distillery and its associated warehousing sites, electrical work has to fit around production activity, engineering priorities, secure access, stored stock and the availability of equipment for isolation. A technically sound solution also needs a practical route to installation.

Some requirements are planned improvements. Others begin with a fault, a damaged circuit, a new item of equipment or a compliance inspection that identifies remedial work. The priority can change, but the process still needs a defined scope, suitable controls and a clear handback.

Where work interfaces with a hazardous zoned area, the task must also follow the client’s existing hazardous-area information, equipment requirements, permit arrangements and DSEAR considerations. The whole site is not treated as one uniform environment.

The aim is consistent: complete the agreed electrical work safely, keep the solution maintainable and minimise avoidable disruption to the client’s operation.

Electrical work at a distillery may interface with identified gas and vapour hazardous areas and tasks with DSEAR considerations. WB plans the electrical scope using the client’s existing DSEAR information, hazardous-area drawings or classification, equipment requirements and permit arrangements.

Work within an identified gas or vapour hazardous area proceeds only where the agreed scope, equipment selection, site information and competence requirements are clear. The requirements are considered for the specific task and location rather than being applied as a generic label to the whole estate.
