When Is a Dedicated Containment Package the Right Route?

A dedicated containment package suits a project where the routes and supports for power, control, data or other suitable cables form a clearly defined work package. It may be installed before cabling by another contractor or delivered as part of a wider WB Electrical installation.

The route still needs to be planned around the cable types and quantities, loading, required separation, environment, support method, access and future use. WB can review existing containment, proposed drawings and actual site conditions before the final system and responsibilities are agreed.

A good starting point when you need to:

  • Extend or modify existing containment after a layout change
  • Replace damaged or unsuitable sections within a defined scope

What Containment and Conduit Work Can WB Deliver?

No single containment type suits every route. The final selection depends on the cables, loading, environment, access, required mechanical protection, appearance and the project specification.

Cable Tray and Cable Ladder

Galvanised tray or ladder routes for suitable power, control and larger cable systems, with supports and changes of level planned for the actual route and loading.

Wire Basket Systems

Open basket containment for suitable data, communications and lighter cable routes where access, ventilation and future changes are important considerations.

Trunking Systems

Steel or PVC trunking for suitable perimeter, riser, plant-room and distribution routes, with size, segregation and access selected for the intended cables and location.

Steel and PVC Conduit

Surface or concealed conduit routes where local protection, a defined appearance or a robust final connection route is required for the agreed installation.

Drops, Risers and Route Extensions

New vertical and horizontal sections that connect existing routes to equipment, work areas, floors or extensions after a site change.

Unistrut and other suitable support arrangements, fixings, route labels and agreed identification developed around the substrate, loading, access and installation environment.

What Helps WB Scope a Containment Installation?

You do not need a finished containment drawing before making contact. The information already available helps WB identify the likely system, survey needs, access requirements and questions that should be resolved before quotation.

  • Site address, work area and installation environment
  • The purpose of the containment and the cable or system it will support
  • Cable types, quantities, sizes or a cable schedule where available
  • Route drawings, start and finish points, levels and required changes of direction
  • Required separation, spare capacity or client and project specifications
  • Walls, steelwork, soffits or other substrates available for support and fixing
  • Moisture, corrosion, impact, cleaning, outdoor exposure and access constraints

Drawings and photographs can begin the review, but route dimensions, substrates, loading, high-level access, penetrations and interfaces with other services may still need to be verified on site before the final scope is confirmed.

Containment, Cabling and the Wider Installation

Containment supports and protects a cable route, but it does not by itself define who designs the cables, installs them, terminates them or commissions the connected system. Recording those responsibilities early helps prevent gaps between contractors.

Containment-Only Package

The agreed scope can cover route setting-out, containment sections, bends and changes of level, supports, fixings, identification, access and defined penetrations. It should state clearly whether cable installation is excluded or follows later.

Containment with Electrical Installation

Checks, Identification and Handover

The handover is matched to the containment system and agreed responsibilities. WB confirms the installation checks, identification and records included, together with any cabling, electrical testing or follow-on work that remains with WB or another contractor.

Installation and Support Checks

The installed route, joints, supports, fixings, changes of level, covers and accessible finish are checked as appropriate to the selected system and agreed scope.

Earthing and Electrical Continuity

Earthing, bonding or electrical-continuity provisions are assessed and recorded where they apply to the containment system and the associated electrical design. A containment-only package does not automatically generate an Electrical Installation Certificate.

Route and Cable Identification

Containment routes, sections or supported cable systems are identified where required by the specification or agreed installation scope.

Marked-Up and Follow-On Information

As-fitted notes, marked-up drawings, product information or other route records are supplied where included. Electrical certification is provided only where associated electrical installation work requires it.

Questions About Containment and Conduit Installation

These answers explain common system, route, responsibility and handover considerations. The final package still depends on the cables, environment, access, specification and actual site conditions.

What is electrical containment?

Electrical containment is the route and support system used to carry, organise or protect suitable cables. Common systems include cable tray, ladder, wire basket, trunking and conduit, selected for the cables, environment and installation requirements.

Which is best: tray, basket, trunking or conduit?

There is no universal best option. Cable type and loading, mechanical protection, environment, separation, appearance, access and the project specification all affect the choice. A route may use more than one containment type.

Can WB install containment without installing the cables?

Yes, where the package is clearly defined. The scope should identify who provides cable information, who approves the route, and who is responsible for cable installation, termination, testing and commissioning after the containment is complete.

Can existing containment be extended or modified?

Potentially. WB reviews the condition, supports, route, capacity, access and compatibility of the existing system before confirming whether an extension, alteration, partial replacement or new route is appropriate.

Can the same containment route carry power and data cables?

It may be possible in a suitably designed system, but the required segregation, containment arrangement and cable performance criteria must be established for the actual services and specification. WB can coordinate suitable physical data routes through its Data and Connectivity Infrastructure service.

Can WB work at height or in operational premises?

Yes, subject to the site, risk assessment and agreed access method. WB has experience of high-level industrial and warehouse work. MEWPs, scaffold, permits, exclusion zones, phasing and any electrical isolations are planned for the actual route and premises.

Who is responsible for penetrations and fire stopping?

The contract should identify who creates or prepares openings, confirms structural suitability, seals weather-exposed routes and supplies or installs suitable fire-stopping systems. WB can coordinate these interfaces, but they are not assumed to be included unless the agreed scope states that they are.

What checks and documents are provided?

The containment installation is checked as appropriate to the selected system and agreed scope. Route identification, applicable continuity or bonding information and marked-up records are provided where included. An Electrical Installation Certificate applies only when associated electrical installation work requires one.
