Not every concern needs a full replacement. The right route may be a defined repair, extension to suitable equipment, new sub-board or planned replacement, depending on condition, capacity, compatibility and the change the site needs to make.
The existing board needs planned replacement
A confirmed defect, poor maintainability, unsuitable equipment or a wider installation change means the existing board should be reviewed for a defined replacement scope.
The site needs more capacity or area distribution
A fit-out, extension, new tenant area or production change needs suitable sub-distribution, spare capacity or an additional board for a defined part of the site.
A new load changes the distribution requirement
Machinery, plant, HVAC or other new equipment affects upstream capacity, protective arrangements, circuit routes and the practical changeover plan.

Inspection, testing, applicable electrical certification, circuit identification, board schedules and agreed records for the completed distribution work.
Incoming-supply changes, metering, network-operator work, landlord equipment and defects on downstream circuits can affect the project without automatically forming part of the board-replacement scope. Those boundaries are confirmed before work proceeds.

A board change affects connected circuits and can interrupt important services. Bring existing schedules, reports, future loads, operating hours and known restrictions into the conversation early so the equipment, responsibilities and changeover window can be agreed before procurement.

Review the existing distribution
We review the supply and earthing information available, board location, connected circuits, existing records, reason for the change and any condition or capacity concerns already identified.

Confirm loads, responsibilities and constraints
Present and future loads, critical circuits, landlord or network interfaces, access, working hours and any services that cannot lose power without planning are identified.

Agree equipment, changeover and handover
The board, associated alterations, installation sequence and outage plan are agreed, then the work is installed, inspected, tested, labelled and handed back against the defined scope.
Do not remove board covers or enter restricted electrical areas to obtain photographs for a quotation. Closed-board photographs, visible labels, existing schedules and reports are enough to start the review; the installation can be verified safely during an agreed site visit.

A clear distribution handover
- Inspection and testing matched to the new or altered distribution equipment and affected installation.
- Applicable electrical certificates or test records for the work completed.
- Updated board schedules, circuit identification and labels where included in the agreed scope.
- Agreed marked-up, as-installed or product information where the contract requires it.
The handover should make clear what changed, which circuits and boards were included and which separate defects or follow-on items remain outside the completed distribution scope.
Keep upstream and downstream boundaries visible
- Incoming-supply, network-operator, metering or landlord work where owned by another party.
- Existing downstream circuit defects or wider remedial work not included in the board package.
- New machinery, plant or specialist equipment requirements that need their own connection information and electrical scope.
- Temporary supplies, continuity arrangements or wider fit-out work unless expressly included and allocated.
Responsibilities can be allocated differently on a particular site. The quotation and project information should record the actual board scope, interfaces and changeover responsibilities rather than rely on assumptions.

Commercial distribution board questions
When should a commercial distribution board be replaced?
There is no single age at which every board must be replaced. Replacement can follow condition findings, damage, poor maintainability, inadequate capacity or a planned installation change. A survey helps distinguish a full replacement from a contained repair, extension or other remedial.
Does every distribution board concern require a full replacement?
No. Investigation may identify a fault, a defined repair, a labelling issue, a suitable extension or another contained remedial. Condition, compatibility, capacity and the intended change should be understood before replacement is treated as the answer.
Can a board be changed without shutting down the whole site?
Sometimes a phased change, partial shutdown, suitable temporary provision or out-of-hours changeover may be possible, but affected equipment still needs a safe isolation plan. The available options depend on the distribution arrangement, critical loads, access and agreed scope.
Can WB add a new sub-board for expansion or new equipment?
Yes, where the surveyed installation, available capacity, protection, route and upstream distribution are suitable for the proposed work. Equipment-specific supplies can be coordinated separately where that keeps the responsibilities clearer.
What testing and documents are provided after distribution board work?
The completed electrical work is inspected and tested as appropriate to the scope. Applicable certification or test records, updated circuit information, labels and other agreed handover information are provided where they apply to the work completed.
