HSE site-lighting guidance highlights the need for suitable illumination where natural light is inadequate, without misleading safety colours or creating shadows that hide hazards. If a lighting failure could create a health and safety risk, an appropriate emergency arrangement may also be needed. Equipment, voltage, protection and inspection must suit the work and environment, with temporary installations considered against current BS 7671 requirements, including construction and demolition requirements where applicable. A hire label, LED fitting or 110V plug does not by itself define a safe, suitable installation.

What does a temporary site lighting installation include?

How do you decide how much temporary lighting a site needs?

WB starts with the areas, tasks, routes, hazards, working hours, people, vehicles, mounting options, environmental conditions and the consequence of a lighting failure. The proposed fittings and positions can then be assessed for useful coverage, shadows, glare, colour appearance and changes as the job progresses. A lux target may be specified by the project designer, client standard or task assessment where required.

Does WB provide 110V temporary site lighting?

Yes, where 110V centre-tapped-to-earth equipment is the suitable route for the project. HSE construction guidance identifies 110V CTE tools and site equipment as a useful approach in relevant construction environments. It is not a substitute for assessing the supply, equipment, earthing, protection, connectors, cable routes and actual environmental risk, and it is not automatically the right voltage for every temporary-lighting task.

Can WB provide temporary power as well as lighting?

Yes. WB can coordinate a lighting-only installation from a suitable existing source or provide an agreed temporary power and distribution scope. The review considers the lighting load alongside tools, cabins, welfare, plant or other temporary demands. The proposal confirms responsibility for the source, generators or battery equipment, transformers, boards, protection, fuel or charging, hire and specialist support.

How is temporary lighting inspected, moved or extended as work progresses?

The handover should define who carries out user checks, how damage or defects are reported, the planned inspection and test approach, and who is authorised to move or extend the system. HSE electrical-equipment guidance notes that harsh conditions can require more frequent checks. WB can agree a risk-based inspection route and record authorised alterations as the layout and work face change.

What happens if the main temporary lighting supply fails?

The consequence of loss is considered during the review. If failure could expose people to risk, suitable emergency or backup lighting may be needed for the affected routes or work areas. The design must also avoid a protective-device arrangement where one fault removes more lighting than the risk assessment can tolerate. Any central battery, generator, UPS or standby interface and required operating duration are separately assessed and tested within the agreed scope.

Can WB install temporary lighting in live or hazardous environments?

Yes, subject to a defined survey and scope. In a live site, WB can plan access, permits, isolations, segregation, retained operations and phased work with the responsible site team. In a hazardous area, the current DSEAR assessment, area classification, substances, temperature class, equipment protection level and site rules are needed before suitable equipment and CompEx competence can be confirmed. Hazardous-area installation is treated as an explicit project requirement, not an assumption.

Does WB hire equipment and remove the system at the end?

WB can coordinate equipment supply or a hire route where this is agreed, but the quotation should state who owns each item and who is responsible for delivery, off-hire, loss, damage, spares, fuel or charging, routine care and specialist attendance. WB can also isolate, remove and make safe the agreed temporary installation at the end, including defined reinstatement. No owned hire fleet or inclusive removal service should be assumed unless it is written into the proposal.
