What the Survey Can Record, and What It Cannot Prove

The agreed report turns visible heat patterns into traceable maintenance information. Its value depends on safe access, the equipment state, the recorded conditions and appropriate technical interpretation.

Thermal imaging is not a pass or fail certificate. Internal parts hidden behind barriers or covers may not be visible, and reflective surfaces can affect apparent temperature. A normal image does not rule out every electrical defect; an abnormal image does not establish the root cause without suitable investigation.

These answers explain what thermal imaging can contribute, the conditions it needs and how it fits into a wider electrical maintenance plan.

What does electrical thermal imaging show?

It records infrared radiation from visible surfaces and presents the resulting temperature pattern as a thermogram. Unusual differences between phases, connections or comparable components can indicate an area that needs investigation, monitoring or remedial work.

How is condition monitoring different from a one-off thermal inspection?

Condition monitoring uses a baseline and planned repeat visits to follow named assets, previous anomalies and completed repairs over time. A standalone thermal imaging inspection may be more suitable when the main requirement is a one-off audit, insurance submission or independent report.

Does the equipment need to remain energised?

Electrical thermal imaging is often most informative while equipment is energised and carrying a representative load. That does not remove the need for safe access. Covers, barriers, permits and approach to live equipment are agreed from the installation, site rules and risk assessment.

What load is needed for a meaningful survey?

There is no single load level that suits every asset. The aim is to scan during a normal or otherwise representative operating condition, then record the available context. Lightly loaded or idle equipment may not reveal a developing heat pattern that appears during heavier use.

Does thermal imaging replace an EICR or electrical testing?

No. Thermal imaging is a complementary condition-monitoring technique. It does not test all safety requirements, reveal every concealed defect or replace an EICR, periodic inspection or other task-specific electrical testing.

What can the survey report include?

The agreed report can include thermograms, visual reference photographs, asset or location details, relevant observed conditions, prioritised findings and recommended next actions. The required format, asset schedule and comparison with previous surveys should be agreed before the visit.

How often should electrical thermal imaging be repeated?

The interval should reflect asset criticality, operating hours, load, environment, previous findings, maintenance history and any client or insurer requirement. A baseline survey helps establish which equipment merits repeat monitoring and at what practical frequency.

What happens if an abnormal heat pattern is found?

The finding is considered against its location, load, comparable components and available history. Depending on the apparent risk, the next step may be prompt isolation, further electrical investigation, a planned repair, closer monitoring or a post-remedial re-scan.
