Choosing CAT6 or CAT6A for the Actual Requirement

Cable category should not be selected from a headline speed alone. The application, length, complete component system, installation environment, remote powering, active equipment and required acceptance test all affect the specification.

CAT6 can suit many current office, commercial and equipment connections. The decision still depends on the application, permanent-link length, pathway, environment, PoE requirement, active equipment and the stated test limit.

Higher-bandwidth copper infrastructure

CAT6A Cabling

CAT6A is the recognised copper route for 10GBASE-T over a full 100 metre channel. It needs suitable cable, connecting hardware, pathways, termination practice and testing as one system, rather than a CAT6A cable label alone.

The client or appointed network designer should confirm the application and performance requirement. WB can review routes, containment, installation constraints, materials and test deliverables against that issued requirement.

If a manufacturer system warranty or standards-based certification is required, identify it before materials are selected. Approved components, installer status, installation rules, permanent-link or channel limits and the required certification records may all affect the package.

Verification, Qualification and Certification Are Different

A green light on a basic tester and a standards-based certification report are not the same outcome. WB will define the included test level and record format so the client knows what the installation evidence does, and does not, demonstrate.

Basic physical checks

Verification

Verification can check items such as wire map, continuity, length and physical faults, depending on the tester used. It helps confirm that conductors and terminations are connected, but does not by itself prove full category performance.

Application capability

Qualification

Qualification is used to assess whether an existing link can support stated network applications. It is useful for troubleshooting and reuse decisions, but it is different from measuring every parameter required for standards-based certification.

Measured against a stated limit

Certification

Certification uses an appropriate field certifier to measure the installed link against a defined category or class limit. The link type, standard, adapter, instrument, calibration status and result format must all match the agreed requirement.

What the Quotation Should State

The point schedule, copper category or class, permanent-link or channel test, applicable standard and limit, instrument and adapter, calibration requirement, pass or fail rule, electronic result format, labels, drawings and treatment of failed or inaccessible links should be clear before mobilisation. If the requested test package is outside WB’s confirmed in-house provision, the quotation will identify how it is to be delivered.

Does WB Electrical install CAT6 and CAT6A cabling?

Should we choose CAT6 or CAT6A?

The choice depends on the required network application, link length, pathway, electromagnetic environment, PoE demand, active equipment, expansion plans and test or warranty requirements. CAT6A is intended to support 10GBASE-T over a full 100 metre channel, but the complete installed system and test requirement must be considered.

Are all new data points tested?

The required test level must be agreed in the quotation. This may range from verification checks to qualification or standards-based certification. WB will state the included method and outputs instead of using the word certified for every type of test.

What is the difference between verification, qualification and certification?

Verification checks basic connectivity and physical faults. Qualification assesses whether a link can support particular network applications. Certification measures the link against defined category or class performance limits using an appropriate field certifier. They are different deliverables and should not be used interchangeably.

Can WB add or relocate data points in an occupied office?

Yes, subject to survey and access. Work can be planned around desk layouts, ceiling access, business hours, noise, isolations and the need to keep other areas operating. The programme and any out-of-hours requirement are agreed for the specific site.

Can WB install cabling for Wi-Fi access points, CCTV and access control?

WB can install the agreed cabling, containment, mounting interfaces, PoE pathway and local electrical supplies for issued equipment requirements. Device selection, wireless coverage design, cybersecurity, configuration and final system commissioning normally remain with the appointed specialist.

Can you tidy an existing data cabinet?

WB can assess patch panels, cable management, labels, local power, damaged terminations and agreed legacy cabling. Active connections and service-critical equipment must be identified with the responsible IT contact before anything is disconnected, rerouted or removed.

Can structured data cabling be delivered with electrical work?

Do you install fibre optic cabling?
